How to Uninstall Hookmark

If you wish to remove all traces of Hookmark on your Mac, then you can follow the enumerated list of steps below. If you are a Setapp user, then where the instructions below refer to ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.cogsciapps.hook/ apply the step to ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.cogsciapps.hook-setapp folder.

We recommend you read the entire list first. Moreover, please keep in mind that Hookmark is responsible for linking documents. It does not create many documents, except that you can create “.hook” files (an advanced, Pro feature]. Hookmark’s handy Link to New feature creates files of third party apps (e.g., in Pages, Excel, etc.) Those are not Hookmark files per se. So, odds are you will not want to delete them.

The steps for completely removing all traces of Hookmark on your system are:

  1. Remove the Hookmark application from the /Applications folder, or wherever you stored it.
  2. Remove Hookmark’s application support folder from your Library folder: ~/Library/Application Support/com.cogsciapps.hook.
  3. Remove Hookmark’s preferences file from your Library folder ~/Library/Preferences/com.cogsciapps.hook.plist.
  4. Consider removing some of, or the entire “Hook” folder from your Documents folder: ~/Documents/Hook. But please keep in mind that this folder also contains documents that are created by Hookmark but are not Hookmark files per se. This is particularly true of the Notes folder, which is the default home for files created via Hookmark’s handy Link to New command. If you configured a different folder for “notes”, then refer to it.
  5. If you configured Hookmark to apply a Hookmark Finder tag to files it creates via Link to New, then use Spotlight to find all files with this Finder tag. (Simply search for tag:Hookmark in Spotlight). You can then remove the Hook Finder tag as you would any other Finder tag. (See: How do I remove a Tag from a document in ….)
  6. Some files created with Link to New might have a meta-data tag named com.apple.metadata:kMDItemWhereFroms. This is a feature that will be removed as of version 1.1.3 or 1.2 of Hookmark. Users can use the command line incantation xattr -d com.apple.metadata:kMDItemWhereFroms <pathname> on files created with Link to New. Drag and drop all such files into Terminal where you would have typed <pathname>.
  7. Use Spotlight to search for and remove files ending with .hook.

Please keep in mind, also, that tags do not consume space, nor do they survive email transfer or most syncing operations. Moreover, “.hook” files are extremely small (typically just one line).
