(How) Can I switch from the stand-alone Hookmark version to using Hookmark on Setapp
If you are updating from Hook 3.9 to Hookmark, please first read these release notes. You may zip Hook.app to keep a permanent copy. Then please quit and delete Hook.app.
The Setapp version of Hookmark has a unique bundle ID: com.cogsciapps.hook-setapp
. The stand-alone version of Hookmark is com.cogsciapps.hook
. The stand-alone version is available via:
The two versions store Hookmark’s database and preferences in different sub-folders within the ~/Library/
folder. To migrate from the stand-alone to Setapp versions:
- Run the stand-alone copy of Hook or Hookmark and take screenshots of each of its Preferences tabs. (You will need to reconfigure your preferences manually).
- while no version of Hook or Hookmark is running make a backup of
~/Library/Application Support/com.cogsciapps.hook/
by compressing it. (Please do not simply assume Time Machine or your backup software are working properly. Compress the folder and do not delete the compressed file until well after you are sure the transition is working properly). - Rename
~/Library/Application Support/com.cogsciapps.hook/
to~/Library/Application Support/com.cogsciapps.hook-setapp/
. - Run the Setapp version and make sure that your bookmarks are all there (use Hookmark’s search).
- Re-establish Hookmark preferences because they are in different files in
~/Library/Preferences
.
To switch from the Setapp version of Hookmark to the stand-alone version of Hookmark, repeat Step 1 with ~/Library/Application Support/com.cogsciapps.hook-setapp/
; then repeat step 2 in opposite direction.
How does the Setapp version of Hookmark differ from the stand-alone version?
The Setapp version of Hookmark has different licensing logic compared to the stand-alone version of Hookmark. Also, it uses Setapp’s diagnostics services and other software libraries required for Setapp integration.
How can I know which version of Hookmark I am using?
You may use the About Hookmark window to distinguish the versions. If you are using the Setapp version, you will see “Setapp” in that window. The standalone version in contrast:
- references the Updates license expiration date
- references the tier (Basic, Standard, Pro).
What tier of Hookmark is on Setapp?
The stand-alone version of Hookmark has four modes: Trial, Basic, Standard and Pro. The Setapp version of Hookmark always runs in Pro mode.
Why is Hookmark on Setapp?
There are many reasons. For many years, Setapp users and Hookmark users have asked Macpaw and CogSci Apps for Hookmark (previously known as “Hook app”) to join Setapp. Hookmark augments much of the best software on Setapp. We wish to provide Setapp customers with the benefits of Hookmark. Hookmark’s presence on Setapp will benefit Setapp customers and help spread the word about Hookmark. It will also help bring tens of thousands, ultimately more, new customers to Setapp.
We also felt this is a great way to promote the objectives of the Manifesto for Ubiquitous Linking.
We also wish to express our support to Ukraine in its hour of need. Via Macpaw’s Setapp, we (CogSci Apps Corp.) will donate 20% of our proceeds from Setapp to help Ukraine for a minimum of one calendar quarter.
