Joplin: Free your notes—and connect them with Hookmark

We’re delighted to announce that Joplin, the free, open-source note-taking app, is Hookmark’s Partner of the Month for November!

Joplin is a versatile note-taking and to-do app for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android. It lets you capture ideas, organize research, manage notes and tasks, and keep information accessible across your devices.

Joplin has several features that we particularly appreciate. It supports Markdown as well as rich-text editing, offers a web clipper, and can handle attachments such as PDFs and images. You can organize your notes into notebooks, search them, and extend Joplin with plugins.

Joplin is also designed with privacy and user control in mind. Your notes are available offline, and you can synchronize them through services such as Dropbox, OneDrive and Joplin Cloud, with optional end-to-end encryption.

Joplin is open source and uses an open format. You retain control of your information.

Joplin and Hookmark: Better together

We recently added support for Joplin to Hookmark. You can now bidirectionally link your Joplin notes to information in other compatible Mac apps.

Why does that matter?

Suppose you’re reading a research paper in PDF format and taking notes about it in Joplin. With Hookmark, you can link the Joplin note directly to the PDF. Later, when you return to the PDF, you can instantly access your notes. And when you’re reading your notes, you can jump straight back to the PDF.

The same principle applies to many other kinds of information. You can link a Joplin note to an email containing feedback, a task in your task manager, a web page, a video or a document you’re writing.

This is especially useful when you return to a project after an interruption. Instead of searching for relevant notes, documents and correspondence, you can navigate directly between them.

Joplin helps you capture and organize your knowledge. Hookmark helps you connect that knowledge to the information it is about.

That’s a central principle of ubiquitous linking: your information should be accessible from wherever you need it, regardless of which apps contain it.

Try Joplin with Hookmark

If you haven’t tried Joplin, we encourage you to download it. It’s free and open source.

If you’re already using Joplin, make sure you have the latest Hookmark integration scripts. Open Hookmark’s settings, select Updates, and check for updates. Joplin support was last tweaked with integration scripts version 439.

We’re pleased to welcome Joplin as our November partner. We appreciate software developers who make it easier for people to work with their information, enabling them to link their content to related information.

Happy linking!
