Hookmark is a powerful bookmarking and linking tool, but it doesn’t need to do everything. Other utilities can complement it in useful ways.
In a new Substack article, I explain how I use text expansion software (in my case, TextExpander) to access hundreds, perhaps more than a thousand, web links through a personal system of abbreviations. For example, I use # to prefix abbreviations that expand into URLs, and [ for those that expand into Markdown links.
This technique exploits our remarkable ability to learn and apply patterns. It also complements Hookmark’s bookmarking and contextual linking features. Whereas Hookmark helps you retrieve information through its relationships with other resources, text expansion utilities let you access information through learned shorthand.
The approach works with other Mac utilities too, including Typinator, aText, Raycast and Alfred.
